With the new release of a Disney classic, The Little Mermaid, we’re bound to see mermaids roaming the streets during this month’s Halloween festivities. As your clients prepare to be dressed up for a night on the town, it’s important to know how to do mermaid-inspired hairstyles that are guaranteed to be the talk of the town.
The Ashtae Artistry Team came together for a session to showcase their creativity and hopefully inspire others to explore the vibrant and awe-inspiring world of mermaid-inspired hair trends!
In this article, we will guide you through the steps to achieve mesmerizing mermaid styles that will make heads turn and hearts flutter. You will find two different hairstyles, the Ashtae products used for each one, and the process each stylist used to make it possible.
Mermaid Style #1:Quick and Easy Braid To Go! Stylist: Melanie Taylor @ms_uvcertified Owner of Unique Vision Salon in Augusta, GA MUA: Yvonne Gaines @colorqueenashtae
Next, you want to create your 2 braids using pre-stretched braiding hair. Using the top of a mannequin stand or braid holder wrap the hair around creating equal length on each side. Lightly spray Ashtae Sili Gloss on each side. This will help with separating the hair, eliminate flyaways and frizz, and also give a nice shine.
To continue, take half from the left and half from the right giving you 3 strands to create your braid.
Braid the hair loosely all the way to the end and secure it with a rubber band. This will give you the flexibility to stretch the braid’s width as needed while placing it on the client’s head.
Remove the base of the braid from the stand and slide a Bobby pin through the middle to keep the top hole secure and open.
Repeat the process for Braid #2.
Now using your rattail comb make a diagonal part on the left side of the client's hair using the arch of the eyebrow as your guide. The part will stop at the top of the crown then complete it by going straight down the middle to the back of the nape giving you two sections.
You are now going to apply the Ashtae Lay & Stay around the perimeter of the section along with The Ashtae Lock & Twist Gel. Cornrow both sides going straight to the back creating a halo foundation. Secure ends under the back of the braid.
Starting from the left side you will place your first synthetic braid at the beginning of the cornrow securing it with a bobby pin that you have at the opening of the braid. You now want to cascade the braid going around the back of the head stopping at the ear on the right side of the head and securing it with hair pins. Make sure the braid is completely covering the cornrow of the client’s hair. Once placed where you like using a needle and thread lightly stitch it in different areas to secure the braid and remove hairpins.
Starting from the right side of the head you will repeat the same exact steps except you will cascade around the front of the head going to the right stopping at ear securing with hair pins. Be sure to make sure that the braid is covering the cornrow. Then go throughout and lightly stitch using needle and thread and remove hairpins. This braid will be much longer since it has a shorter distance to go around. Using the excess braid you will now begin to roll and free form around the right side of the head creating the full petal illusion secured by stitching where needed.
Once completed, spray the Diamond Hold throughout the style with a diffuser to the seal braid together and eliminate any flyaways. Now Wallah! Your Braid-to-go is complete.
Part the hair off to position it to be a ponytail. Then mix the Ashtae High Gloss Curls Wax and our Lock and Twist to twist the hair up using braiding hair. If you want a more natural look, burn the ends so the braiding hair can mimic the actual natural hair.
After twisting the hair up, use the Hair and Scalp Balm to make sure the scalp is moisturized while wearing this style. The client can wear the ponytail for approximately two to three weeks.
Pull the hair up into a ponytail and braid it down with braiding hair, and then add some commercial hair. This will help to extend the ponytail to create this look.
Then finish up using the Ashtae Hair Oil, Ashtae Sili Gloss, and some of the Ashtae Diamond Hold to help hold the curls. You can also use the Ashtae Heavenly Foam to tame the curls to avoid frizziness and give them this nice look.
Creating mesmerizing mermaid styles is a journey that allows you to channel your creativity. Whether you choose to embrace vibrant colors, cascading waves, or intricate braids, the key is to let your imagination soar and dive into the depths of mermaid-inspired beauty.

Blow dry and flat iron hair straight ( If hair is already straight, skip this step).
Starting in the nape, part of a section is 1 1/2 inch. Use a clip to hold extra hair in place. Spray The Ashtae Diamond Hold to each section before curling. Use a curling wand to curl the section. Continue until all hair has been curled.
Use a wide tooth comb to comb curls together. Using a rat tail comb, dry wave the hair in the desired direction, spray with diamond hold, and use duckbill clips to hold it in place.
Wave hair in the opposite direction and repeat the previous steps until all strands are waved.
